Goat Gestation: Turning a Breeding Date into a Due Window
Editorial team · Published October 20, 2026
"Bred in October, kids due when, exactly?" If you know the breeding date, the answer is a countdown, not a guess - and everything about a calm kidding season hangs on that date.
The number to plan around
Goat gestation runs about 145 to 155 days - roughly five months. Ohio State University Extension's reproduction factsheet and the University of Wyoming Extension's livestock gestation calculator both use this range for goats; sheep run slightly shorter at about 144 to 147 days. Because it's a range rather than a single day, think in terms of a due window: mark the earliest date (day 145) as the point when your kit, your pen, and your attention all need to be ready.
Why the breeding date is the whole game
Every preparation works backward from the due window: when to move the doe to a kidding pen, when to stock the kit, when to start checking udder development, when not to plan a weekend away. If the breeding date is uncertain, the window stretches - and the watch period with it. This is the strongest argument for writing the breeding date down the day it happens, even if the "record system" is a note on your phone.
Run the countdown
Two easy options:
- The University of Wyoming Extension publishes a free livestock gestation calculator online - enter species and breeding date, and it returns the due window.
- Our own breeding window and fair planner on the tools page does the same math right here, and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
Either way, once you have the window, put the dates where you'll actually see them - and share them with anyone who does chores while you're gone.
Keep the dates with the doe, in PawLine
A breeding date scratched on a barn calendar is gone when the calendar page turns. You can find a better home for it in the PawLine app: save the breeding date and due window with each doe, add notes as her condition changes, and have the whole timeline in your pocket when your vet asks "when is she due?" You can find this in the PawLine app.
